CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jen cried when Sky told her about the Phoenix school teacher. She threw her arms around her neck and held her Akihanee friend for a long time, only repeating one thing: ‘There’s still hope… There’s still hope…’

“Yes,” Sky murmured. “There is still hope.”

She had gone back to Station Riigel on her own when all she really wanted to do was tear the whole planet apart in a renewed effort to find Kelsey. But of course, she knew that supporting Arktar and getting the back-up of the Confederation would go a lot further in terms of achieving that goal. Sky was well aware that she had to carry on putting all her efforts into that task first. For his part, Mitch declared that he was done playing diplomats, and asked if he could remain on Earth this time.

“Since when do you ask me for permission to do anything, Captain?” Sky enquired with a smirk.

He laughed.

“Good point. But look, I’ve done what I could to help the counsellor. It’s you Arktar really needs now, not me.”

It was true, at least in political terms, and Sky approved the request. She spent the entire day of her return to the station and most of that same evening working on her own, in her borrowed planning office. Arktar did not contact her or even make an appearance. Sky tried to convince herself that it did not matter. Eventually, she started to doze off while reviewing a bunch of data on the new ships’ engineering specs. But as soon as her head dropped down onto her chest and she began to drift deeper into sleep, a vivid image of Kelsey filled her consciousness. There was a dark tunnel. And a sense of falling down. Faster and faster. ‘Please, Sky… Please, help me…’

Kelsey screamed in pure terror. And as Sky extended both her arms into the darkness, trying to catch her, she just missed her fingers by a few inches, and Kelsey disappeared into the void. ‘No! Kelsey, no!’

Sky jerked awake with a violent start. She leaned forward, eyes closed and clutching her stomach. I’m going to be sick… She stumbled to the bathroom and dry-heaved a few times over the toilet bowl. She could not remember the last meal she had eaten. Something on Earth, probably… There was nothing much in her stomach to throw up, but it was several long seconds before she could stop retching all the same. On unsteady legs, she made it to the sink. She rinsed her mouth and threw water over her face. Her head was spinning, dangerously so. She sank to the floor and spent a few minutes working solely on her breath. She could feel her heart pounding. For a while, there was nothing else that she could do other than sit there and try not to burst into tears. Remnants of McKenna… Her human persona had been prone to panic attacks. Sky knew that this was just her human side acting up. But it had been a while since she had lost control over it so badly.
